I love this little guy. D.D. uses a lego cap and a heavily modified Hunchback of Notre Dame coat. The hair is sculpted. The rest is paint and decals.

Pepper is perfect. The entire Clue Club Gang is impressive but she is the best. In the cartoon she was curvy but the block style still translates well. I tucked her hair under her collar to match her cartoon style. Perfect!!!

A Custom A Day.... 365 days of custom figures Day 76 - Captain Caveman Brenda by Psyguy

Brenda is possibly the curviest of all of the Hanna Barbera females which presented a challenge for a block figure. I couldn't envision her looking right based on any of the hairpieces that I had in my parts bin available to send to Psyguy to make her. Since her body would never look right, her hair was key. I don't think I actually sent a hairpiece across the pond with this set. We discussed two options. I don't remember the first option but he had mentioned having a spare Alice hairpiece that and that was the answer. This perfectly depicts the character and takes away from the lack of wide hips.

Sadly Dee Dee is the Minimate of the Captain Caveman Gang that has no real story to her. I'm very happy with how she turned out but the other two girls in the group required more work to make them accurate. So here's Dee Dee, tomorrow's Brenda. Then we start Clue Club.

Taffy is the character that gave me the idea to pursue having custom Hanna Barbera Minimates made. When I saw DC Minimates' Star Sapphire, I felt her collar and hair, minus the mask would make for the perfect Taffy. Throw in a Star Trek Nurse Chapel skirt and boom. Turns out I was right. I love when that happens. More Psyguy greatness.

A Custom A Day.... 365 days of custom figures Day 73 - Speed Buggy Tinker by Psyguy

Today is the Shaggy of the Speed Buggy Gang, Tinker. Speed Buggy is the Johnny Lightning release. The scale is slightly off for Minimates but I have an artist working on Hot Wheels scale vehicles for all of the Hanna Barbera groups so although they can't sit in them, the groups will be complete.

Tinker's hair and goggles are sculpted from scratch. Psyguy once again nailed it. I'm going to continue to say that. A lot. Because he did! The Hanna Barbera minimates are truly the greatest custom set of toys that I own. Period.

A Custom A Day.... 365 days of custom figures Day 72 - Speed Buggy Debbie by Psyguy

Today is the girl of the Speed Buggy Gang, Debbie. Psyguy nearly always nails every likeness of the Hanna Barbera characters on his first attempt. In the beginning, with the Josie Gang, we debated how they would translate with noses since part of Minimates charm is that the characters do not have noses. Since the noses on Hanna Barbera's designs are simple I asked him to add them. I think they help depict the characters very well. Very few of the Hanna Barbera have required revisions from his initial attempt, however Debbie was one of them. She has an odd flip to her hair that he missed on the first attempt. He also missed the color of her hair on the first try which is also unusual because he had a great eye for color hue. By the second attempt she was the perfect representation of Debbie. I never thought it would be possible to have plastic representations of all of these characters.

Today is the first member of the Speed Buggy Gang. You could learn everything you need to know about race from Hanna Barbera. What? Yes. After Scooby Doo, the granddaddy of it all, most of the pet detective groups featured one character that had darker skin than the rest of the Gang. Nobody discussed it, they just worked together to solve the mystery. Is Mark Spanish? Black? Who cares. He was a member of the gang and here he is in plastic.

A Custom A Day.... 365 days of custom figures Day 70 - Josie & the Pussycats Alan by Psyguy

Today is the last member of the Josie Gang, Alan. Hanna Barbera likes to give their leading men broad, bulky chests which is a tough aspect to translate in to a Minimate. The perfect toy. Hey, you can't have it all. The bulkier chest piece wouldn't translate well to Alan, it's too much besides the bulky chest wouldn't work with his ascot. This is still a great representation of Alan. I changed his hair from what he originally came with. When we designed him we initially used the Marvel Secret Wars Beyonder hairpiece that Valerie uses painted yellow. He now uses an extra Steve Rogers hairpiece.

    A Custom A Day....

Since I began toy collecting as a hobby back in 1990 I have always had a need for custom figures. Toy companies begin action figure lines, begin to release individual characters to create teams and, more often than not leave them incomplete. Many collectors find that custom figures pollute their collection's authenticity by not being mass produced creations from the toy companies that created the preexisting toy lines. I disagree. I feel a quality custom action figure enhances a collection and help create a complete picture.

When characters are chosen for a toy line several factors come in to play. The character's current media relevance (if any), their most iconic look (they may have had multiple costumes through their sometimes vast histories) and gender. Female action figures tend to not sell to parents of the boys who are playing with them so a great many of the female characters are never rendered in plastic in the way the male characters are leaving holes in the collections.

I am a fan of the female heroes primarily so I have purchased and made quite a few "customs" throughout my years as a collector. I find it challenging (ok impossible) to get a smooth, quality finish to my sculpt work, downgrading the quality of my figure's appearance that I create so my custom work tend to be of a Frankenstein type nature where I use different parts such as a torso and arms from one figure attached to the hips and legs of another, and a different head with a full cost of paint to create my pieces. I also struggle with painting facial details on figures. The small areas, the eyes in particular give me the biggest issues. I prefer to reuse another head from a different character that will allow me to not have to paint the facial details since I am heavy handed and tend to paint in clumps rather than smooth, factory produced finishes that many of the customizers I work with can achieve.

Most of the figures that I have in my collection that have intricate sculpting and paint details have been created by other artists from around the world. The UK, The Philippines, Australia, Hong Kong, Canada and from several states throughout the US through personal communication or via eBay, which can be an outstanding resource for quality custom work. I've had the pleasure of meeting some incredibly talented artists through websites & social media. Over the past two years seeking out quality custom figures has become the main focus of my collection. Which is at over 5,000 loose pieces. As you will see over the course of this year this does not just affect super hero toy lines. I collect different toy lines spanning the 1960's through today covering cartoons, movies and television in addition to comic books. Some of the custom pieces I have had done wouldn't have been made as toys because of lack of consumer interest or based on licensing issues simply cannot be made in to toys. I haven't let that stop me from using several different toy lines to amass a complete plastic collection of all of the media I have enjoyed throughout my life.

I have decided to begin a project called A Custom A Day.... to showcase my custom pieces one a day, every day throughout 2015. If you follow me on social media or on this site you may have seen many of them before but with this project I will give a little background of each figure and its relevance to my collection. So check back daily!!!
