A Custom A Day.... 365 days of custom figures Day 69 - Josie & the Pussycats Alexander by Psyguy

Possibly my favorite of Psyguy's renditions of the Josie group, Alexander. The glasses and shirt are perfect, I love Psyguy's sculpts. Alexander's pants come from a C3 Joker so they aren't painted which adds to his quality. Originally his ascot was sculpted but it fell off the shelf and broke. It was far too small to repair, luckily the Walking Dead Minimates released a walker that wore a neckerchief so I recycled it and it works perfectly. I don't know how Psyguy sculpts such small details it I'm thankful that he can!

Alexandra was going to be last member of the Gang I shared but she insisted on going now. Yeah, I said it. More Psyguy greatness. She and Alexander are my favorites from this set. The Pussycats wouldn't be complete without Alexandra's loyal cat, Sebastian. I made him from a Fisher Price Imaginext Catwoman's cat with a little bit of sculpt on his head and some paint.

Today is the third member of the Pussycats, Valerie by Psyguy. He captured every single member of the gang flawlessly. They look just like they fell out of the cartoon. Valerie's hair piece is from the Secret Wars Beyonder and a skirt from Star Trek Nurse Chapel, the rest is a face decal, some sculpt for the sleeves and paint. The perfect toy folks. Don't worry, I'll have you convinced by the end of the month.

Of the of the 30 Hanna Barbera Minimates that Psyguy has created for me, Melody is theonr that has fallen apart. He struggled with the decals that created the pleats on the bottom of the skirt. It was in two pieces and the front decal has fallen off. I attempted to use a DC Minimates Cheetah to simulate the band look and when I removed her head, I knocked her face sticker loose so Melody is kinda sad looking. It can only get better from here.

Dazzler and First Appearance Psylocke are the first two Minimate customs that I commissioned from Psyguy. I didn't think Diamond Select Toys would maker in this costume although the version they released was different. The hair on this version captures the way she looked in Uncanny X-Men Annual #11 by Alan Davis. She uses a Battlestar Galactica Six hairpiece, the rest is decals and paint. Perfect!

Today we have a Kitty Pryde in her original costume as Sprite that I did to round out the Earlier Uncanny team roster. She uses a Billseye mask, Mary Marvel hair, Asyonishing X-Men Shadowcat's legs and arms and Wolfsbane's chest block. I'll say it again, Minimates are the perfect toy, their compatibility is unparalleled.

Today is Psyguy's Captain Caveman. When I saw the DC Comics Star Sapphire Minimate I thought that her collar and hair would make for a perfect base for Taffy from the Teen Angels. Given the quality that Psyguy provided with the Josie Gang and the Speed Buggy Gang after them, I knew he'd hit the Teen Angels out of the park.

I sent him a Ghostbusters Slimer as a base for Captain Caveman with no real expectations as to how he would turn out as long as he nailed the girls' likenesses, which he did but then I saw Captain Caveman!!!! He was perfect. Psyguy has a gift for smooth paint jobs, superb decal applications and flawless paint jobs. He's done a fantastic job team after team with both human and animal characters alike.

After working with Psyguy on several Marvel Minimate customs I decided to see what he could do with Hanna Barbera designs. I've mentioned that I feel that Minimates are the perfect customizable toy and Psyguy has DEFINITELY proven that theory true.

The first set of Hanna Barbera Minimates that Psyguy did was the Josie & the Pussycats Gang. They are my second favorite only to the Mystery Incorporated Gang from Scooby Doo probably because they only had two season , if they were around longer they easily would have been my favorite because they outnumbered the boys 2 to 1. Many toy companies have tried to produce Hanna Barbera toy lines but most do not make it past The Jetsons, Flintstones, Tom & Jerry or the animal characters like Yogi Bear or Hong Kong Phoey. No toy company has produced any of Hanna Barbera's pet detectives with the exception of Mystery Inc.

Scooby Doo's success inspired a great many knock-off shows using the talking pet with 4 kids solving mysteries. Josie and the Gang being owned by Radio and Archie Comics and the cartoon produced by Hanna Barbera does not sound like a successful formula for merchandising. There were puzzles, coloring books, paper dolls and Slurpee cups released back in the 70's but never any toys. It seems like a Batman 66 scenario where two big companies own the property. This is mere speculation and although this set of mates has gotten a lot of feedback, I don't believe there's much of a demand for toys from Josie & the Pussycats or we would have had it with the live action movie.

Josie is the first of a long line of Hanna Barbera inspired Minimates to come this month. Stay tuned!

A Custom A Day.... 365 days of custom figures Day 61 - Marvel Girl Jean Grey Minimate by Psyguy

Today is one of the first Minimates in a long line of custom pieces that the fabulous Psyguy created for me. I have a thing for redheads. Josie, Daphne, Jean Grey, I love them all. This costume has appeared in the Marvel Legends & Marvel Select lines as action figures but neither capture the looks of the character as well as this custom does, she's perfect! Diamond Select Toys has yet to make Jean in this costume in the official Minimate line and I thought the recipe of Mandarin's mask suited her perfectly.

A Custom A Day.... 365 days of custom figures Day 60 - 1st Appearance Rogue Minimate by Psyguy

March is Minimate month at Pop Culture Hoard. I have a pretty extensive custom Minimate collection. In my opinion they are the perfect toy. With a face decal, an appropriate hair piece and a coat of paint these wonderful little block figures can be just about anyone from any property. Diamond Select Toys (DST) is gaining more and more licenses to produce Minimates of older properties all the time. From Pulp Fiction to Kill Bill, from SpongeBob to Aliens. They seemingly can make just about anything into a minimate. I love the simplicity of their design.

Today is a 1st appearance Rogue by the incomparable Psyguy. Psyguy makes amazing Marvel Minimate customs, hell Psyguy makes amazing MINIMATES period. His work looks like they were produced in a factory. Clean lines and perfect sculpted details. DST has done a great job of producing some rather obscure character renditions in ther Marvel Minimate line. 1st appearance Psylocke and Outback Rogue are two customs that I had Psyguy make for me that DST eventually produced. I'm usually pretty good at picking renditions of characters to have customs made of that I know toy companies won't touch. The Minimate line is the only line that has tripped me up by producing duplicate pieces but I'm not complaining. I'm certain this figure will eventually see an official release as she was rendered on a Minimate Secret Wars promotional poster a few years back but we'll see. In the meantime, here's the custom version.

    A Custom A Day....

Since I began toy collecting as a hobby back in 1990 I have always had a need for custom figures. Toy companies begin action figure lines, begin to release individual characters to create teams and, more often than not leave them incomplete. Many collectors find that custom figures pollute their collection's authenticity by not being mass produced creations from the toy companies that created the preexisting toy lines. I disagree. I feel a quality custom action figure enhances a collection and help create a complete picture.

When characters are chosen for a toy line several factors come in to play. The character's current media relevance (if any), their most iconic look (they may have had multiple costumes through their sometimes vast histories) and gender. Female action figures tend to not sell to parents of the boys who are playing with them so a great many of the female characters are never rendered in plastic in the way the male characters are leaving holes in the collections.

I am a fan of the female heroes primarily so I have purchased and made quite a few "customs" throughout my years as a collector. I find it challenging (ok impossible) to get a smooth, quality finish to my sculpt work, downgrading the quality of my figure's appearance that I create so my custom work tend to be of a Frankenstein type nature where I use different parts such as a torso and arms from one figure attached to the hips and legs of another, and a different head with a full cost of paint to create my pieces. I also struggle with painting facial details on figures. The small areas, the eyes in particular give me the biggest issues. I prefer to reuse another head from a different character that will allow me to not have to paint the facial details since I am heavy handed and tend to paint in clumps rather than smooth, factory produced finishes that many of the customizers I work with can achieve.

Most of the figures that I have in my collection that have intricate sculpting and paint details have been created by other artists from around the world. The UK, The Philippines, Australia, Hong Kong, Canada and from several states throughout the US through personal communication or via eBay, which can be an outstanding resource for quality custom work. I've had the pleasure of meeting some incredibly talented artists through websites & social media. Over the past two years seeking out quality custom figures has become the main focus of my collection. Which is at over 5,000 loose pieces. As you will see over the course of this year this does not just affect super hero toy lines. I collect different toy lines spanning the 1960's through today covering cartoons, movies and television in addition to comic books. Some of the custom pieces I have had done wouldn't have been made as toys because of lack of consumer interest or based on licensing issues simply cannot be made in to toys. I haven't let that stop me from using several different toy lines to amass a complete plastic collection of all of the media I have enjoyed throughout my life.

I have decided to begin a project called A Custom A Day.... to showcase my custom pieces one a day, every day throughout 2015. If you follow me on social media or on this site you may have seen many of them before but with this project I will give a little background of each figure and its relevance to my collection. So check back daily!!!
