A Custom A Day.... 365 days of custom figures Day 14 - DC Direct Teen Titans Mal Duncan by 4:F1/15/2015 Mal Duncan uses a simple custom recipe that I found on FigureRealm.com, the sculpting is minimal so I decided to give it a shot. His sleeves, belt and collar are all made from rubber bands. He uses a DC Direct Alex Ross Black Manta figure as his base. The pants above his boots are sculpted using Apoxy Sculpt. They create the illusion well enough but I'm not 100% satisfied with the way the sculpt meets the plastic, it's not smooth enough and doesn't blend. I need more practice. Mal was done in his first appearance costume as opposed to his more action figuresque Guardian or Herald costumes since I had the Black Manta laying around.

A Custom A Day....
Since
I began toy collecting as a hobby back in 1990 I have always had a
need for custom figures. Toy companies begin action figure lines, begin
to release individual characters to create teams and, more often than
not leave them incomplete. Many collectors find that custom figures
pollute their collection's authenticity by not being mass produced
creations from the toy companies that created the preexisting toy lines.
I disagree. I feel a quality custom action figure enhances a
collection and help create a complete picture. Archives
