I loved my Mego dolls as a child. I loved the cheesey plastic coated playsets Mego produced for them. I also love the Internet. It has exposed me to so many brilliant artists who have created so many different types of unique custom dolls, figures and playsets to help me complete all of my favorite teams from my favorite shows growing up. This playset is a perfect example of one of those items. I love the engineering that went in to giving this playset the vintage feel of the original Mego line. I bought this long before the Batman 66 toy license became a reality. I never imagined that there would eventually be an Yvonne Craig Batgirl doll to interact with this playset let alone an Yvonne Craig Barbara Gordon to truly showcase how perfect this playset is. I can only hope that one day there will be an in scale Batgirl 66 cycle to top it off, whether it be a custom or something factory produced.

I love Scooby Doo. It was my first favorite cartoon growing up. I was disappointed when they eventually phased out Fred, Daphne & Velma in favor of Scrappy Doo. I didn't hate Scrappy like most did but I loved the original gang and wanted them back. Hanna Barbera eventually brought back Daphne who was my favorite so I was happy. Hanna Barbera attempted to update the theme of the show to capitalize on the success of Michael Jackson's Thriller. If you watch the opening of The 13 Ghosts of Scooby Doo you see the monsters dancing like they did in the Thriller video. This series was short lived, 13 episodes and only one season. They decided to revamp the crew with an 80's look and added a little Latin looking character called Flim Flam Who looked a lot like my little brother. Wanting to have a complete roster of Scooby through the ages, I had my pal Flipmode craft a Flim Flam from Fimo. Say that five times fast! What he's created is the perfect rendition of the character. He is articulated at the neck and is in scale as my four inch Scooby collection. Now I just need a Vincent Van Ghoul to finish the team. I love this little guy! Wanting some variety in the animal forms that Snowbird takes I used an in scale white doggy-wolf looking animal. I didn't go crazy like I did with Changeling's many animal forms, this is the one and only "custom". Hasbro needs to get her made in her human form in the 3 3/4" Marvel Universe/Infinite/Legends line soon! Another stand in figure that wasn't customized at all. J. Scott Campbell's Sydney Savage was generic enough looking to represent Talia. She's VERY artist specific but still fits well enough for me. I appreciate that DC Direct packed in an extra Strange head with a Batman figure but I wanted him to stand alone outside of the Bat suit so I mounted the head on a random suited body by Mattel. A Custom A Day.... 365 days of custom figures Day 310 - DC Universe Classics Bruce Wayne Batman11/6/2015 This version of Halo is curvier than my original. As soon as I saw the unmasked Marvel Legends Captain Marvel I knew I had my base for a short haired Halo. This rendition has more of an Alan Davis feel to her whereas my original custom was highlighting Jim Aparo's version. I'd still like to do her in her white and black costume but that will need some sculpting so she'll wait. i appreciate that they made a toy of Vanity with his red mirror but I needed him to look the way he did on the cartoon. I carried around this piece of "mirror" sticker for decades inside of a blue Warner Brothers Studio Store Justice League waiting to put it on the face of his mirror to create this custom. His flower is a stickpin shoved through a piece of plastic jewelry. NOW it's Vanity! The DC Direct figure of Barbara Gordon in her wheelchair from the Birds of Prey 3 pack is far too expensive to open so instead I represent Barbara on different shelves as the hard light projection of Oracle with a printout in two different sizes. The cape is a copy of Optimusleo's formula. The face is from a Hexidecimal figure from Reboot. I have gloves but I have yet to attach them. He's tall so he stands in the back of the shelf where you can't tell he's unfinished. Pantha called him sheet so I think the look suits him. This is the second unfinished piece in the project. Riot from The Stingers was the first. |
A Custom A Day....
Since
I began toy collecting as a hobby back in 1990 I have always had a
need for custom figures. Toy companies begin action figure lines, begin
to release individual characters to create teams and, more often than
not leave them incomplete. Many collectors find that custom figures
pollute their collection's authenticity by not being mass produced
creations from the toy companies that created the preexisting toy lines.
I disagree. I feel a quality custom action figure enhances a
collection and help create a complete picture. Archives
