Chunk has a pretty elaborate paint job. This is where this artist's work differs from Psyguy's. Psyguy would have more than likely used water slide decals to create his outfit. This Minimate is all paint with the exception of his head which I believe is from a movie X-Men Blob. The paint job is very clean and professional looking however the water slide decals give the custom pieces a factory produced look.

I'm sure if Diamond Select Toys were to release Goonies Minimates we would see Data with a ton of accessories; the boxing glove, the pincers of peril, slick shoes!!!! Ok maybe not slick shoes but I'm sure he would come with a ton of extras. This rendition captures the essence of the character although his face looks a little too old for Data. Oh well, it's a complete set of Goonies characters. Yay!!!! Merchandising is a nightmare. There's no way Prince would allow the Purple Rain t-shirt Mouth wore on to be sold on merchandise yet whoever created this set did a perfect job of shrinking the album cover down to fit on the shirt!!!! Neither the Mezco nor the Reaction set shows the shirt on the figure or the packaging. Custom Minimates. The perfect toy folks. I've wanted Goonies toy for a long time. Luckily Mezco Toys came to the rescue and released the 4 main Goonies and Sloth with a rumored second wave that would include the rest of the Fratelli family. Wait, what? No Brand! No Stef!? NO ANDY?!?!? Well the first wave of figures was hard to find and terribly over priced for the time that they came out. They retailed for $25 a piece which is the standard today for a collectible but back in 2007 that was unheard of. IF you were lucky you could find them at Spencer's or on a few online retailers. The line stopped production after the first wave was released and no more Goonies toys would be had until Funko's recent Reaction line. Hoping that at some point someone would make custom figures of the missing three kids; Brand, Andy & Stef, I saved the search Custom Goonies on my eBay account. The only thing that ever popped up for over a decade (yeah I said it) was a custom t-shirt and some jewelry. No one cared enough about the whole gang to give it a try. Because the Mezco line was sculpted in such dynamic poses, I couldn't think of base figures for customs suitable enough to fit in. One of the Hogwarts girls probably could have doubled as Andy and I contemplated a Jonah Hex Josh Brolin head for Brand but it all seemed like more hassle than it was worth. Then the existing Goonies figures shot up in price on the aftermarket so buying a second set to open and display with customs of the missing three was going to cost a fortune so I would remain Goonieless. I eventually joined DeviantArt as an outlet to display my artwork. Two years ago I was browsing their custom figure section and stumbled on a picture of a set of custom Goonies Minimates, WITH THE THREE MISSING CHARACTERS!!!! (SEE?!?! Minimates ARE the perfect toy!!!!) I commented on the picture that I needed them and that was the end of it. I saved the photo to my hard drive and wished I could own the set. A year and a half later my saved eBay custom Goonies search turned up the very same set of Minimates WITH A BUY IT NOW!!!! So I did. Now they're MINE!!!! I love it when shit just works out. I obtained a rare Wonder Woman prototype in a similar way. More about that in 2016, when we're done with the customs. For now here's the leader of the Goonies, Mikey. Please note I do not know the artist who made these and they are NOT made by Psyguy. (Although he's more than capable of making these.) Mammoth was an eBay purchase, I don't remember the artist who's work he is. Helps build up the extremely underrepresented villains. Kid Flash, another original Titan that is hard to get included in animation. At least he got his own episode. I purchased him on eBay but I do not remember who the artist was who created this custom. He appears to use Aqualad's body with Robin's head with a JLU Flash's wings on his head. The Bandai Teen Titans line had so much potential but was so limited in character selection. Their 1.5 inch PVC line was rather vast in depth of character selection but for the 3.5 line there were more than a few missed opportunities. Blackfire here was one of them. She is a simple repaint I did of the first release of Starfire. The second release would have suited the character better in both height and expression but I only had one and she was far too expensive to buy again for a custom so Blackfire uses the fist release. Duh look and all. Oh Donna. Donna always gets the shaft when it comes to animation. Young Justice & Teen Titans GO both ignored her. Well fine, she appeared on a monitor at the end of the GO series but that doesn't count. Luckily they put her in the comic so she at least had a design that fit in with the rest of the team. It was more of a take on her original costume than her Pérez look but it was something. I used the Ben 10 chick to make her. The boots & bracelets are sculpt and the stars are stickers. DC Icons line makes me nervous. After Mattel's Club Infinite Earths was cancelled I didn't think DC Collectibles would focus on the classic DC Universe since they moved on to a 7 inch scale nu 52. It took them two years but DC Collectibles has decided to fill the void Mattel left. I worry that some of the figures I've customized will see a retail release. Phobia is one of those figures. My army of female Legionnaires are another example but more on that later. Phobia uses a Star Sapphire body, a movie Jean Grey head and a cape from the fodder bin. A Custom A Day.... 365 days of custom figures Day 100 - Total Justice Cassandra Cain Batgirl by 4:F4/10/2015 Cassandra is one of my earlier customs. Hating the Batman & Robin Alicia Silverstone Batgirl figure design, I used a spare to create Cassandra. She's a simple repaint. The boots are inaccurate but it was more for practice at the time than accuracy. She's not that important. |
A Custom A Day....
Since
I began toy collecting as a hobby back in 1990 I have always had a
need for custom figures. Toy companies begin action figure lines, begin
to release individual characters to create teams and, more often than
not leave them incomplete. Many collectors find that custom figures
pollute their collection's authenticity by not being mass produced
creations from the toy companies that created the preexisting toy lines.
I disagree. I feel a quality custom action figure enhances a
collection and help create a complete picture. Archives
