A Custom A Day.... 365 days of custom figures Day 21 - Marvel Legends Armored Psylocke by Face Customs

When I purchased what I call Poofy Betsy on eBay I found a group shot of Face Customs' Marvel Legends Outback team. I contacted him to find out which team members were available. I purchased Armored Psylocke & an Outback Colossus. He captured this costume perfectly. She maintains all of her articulation. Her metallic finish perfectly finished the figure. It's a simple design but the a fitting good is hard to come by.

She appears to use a Superwoman head and hood. She doesn't have sculpted hair. I have yet to see a customizer effectively execute this version of Betsy with hair. It looks odd hanging out from underneath the hood. I added another of Shinobitron's hot glue butterflies to complete her look. She is one of my favorite customs.

A Custom A Day.... 365 days of custom figures Day 20 - Marvel Legends Betsy Braddock as Captain Britain

This was a figure that I requested Face Customs create for me although it was her first costume, it is the last Psylocke that was customized. Psylocke is best known for the ninja look that Jim Lee gave her back in the 90's. Any merchandise created using Psylocke depicts her as Asian. I wanted her represented in all of her looks from when she was still British.

I searched the Internet looking for the best recipe for the easiest execution of Betsy in this costume but couldn't find any. I believe this is the only custom figure of Betsy in the costume. This is the suit she wore when Slaymaster tore her eyes out in the Captain Britain UK series. It was short lived but I liked the design so I commissioned her.

Face Customs sculpts some of the most dynamic hair of any customizer that I've worked with. It's always a challenge to tell what base figures he uses because of the detailed sculpting. The flow, bounce and curls make his work look factory produced.

A Custom A Day.... 365 days of custom figures Day 19 - Marvel Legends First Appearance Psylocke by Face Customs

Today is the figure that started my Marvel Legends collection, 1st appearance Psylocke. As I've mentioned before, I skipped Marvel Legends because I had a pretty vast representation of the Marvel Universe thanks to Toy Biz's 5 inch line. I wasn't looking to begin a new collection from scratch when the Legends line began in the late 90's. I DID however purchase most of the females Toy Biz did in the Legends line throughtout the years, I'm a sucker for a female figure. That and the random make hero that I liked but there was no focus to the purchases, just whims.

Toy Biz didn't do a very good job of representing the Outback team in plastic. Storm and the boys were done in the 5 inch line but Dazzler, Psylocke and Rogue were left out. I made a Dazzler but the sculpting necessary to get Psylocke and Rogue done is something I couldn't pull off so the team remained unfinished on my shelf. Since I had a pretty good chunk taken out of Pérez's Titans, I wanted to focus on having the X-Men of the 80's made. I just wasn't sure of what scale to have them made in. This figure decided the direction my 80's X-Men would take.

Two years ago I stumbled on this Psylocke figure on eBay at a very reasonable Buy It Now price. I jumped on it. She is my favorite Marvel hero and I always wanted her in this costume. After finding the artist's work on the FigureRealm, I contacted him to about other customs he had made from this era in the X-Men's history. Face Customs had made the entire Outback team and has a gift for crafting fantastic female figures. The Outback X-Men were my favorite Marvel team during the 80's. Although the Byrne era are arguably the best X-Men stories of their history, I started reading the X-Men comics with the Fall of the Mutants storyline so they are special to me. I have since had him create customs of Psylocke in most of her early looks. His work is solid, clean and quick. I used the hot glue psionic butterfly from the Shinobitron custom to help finish her look for this photo.

This week I'll be sharing the rest of the Psylocke customs that Face Customs has created for me and the beginnings of my Marvel Legends collection.

A Custom A Day.... 365 days of custom figures Day 18 - DC Universe Classics Francis Kane by 4:F

Francis Kane is a supporting New Teen Titans character that I made to help round out the Titans shelf. She appeared as a costumed hero called Magenta later on but I wanted her to go with Wally and the original team. Maybe one day I'll get around to making her as Magenta.

She uses all DC Universe Classics parts; Black Canary head and upper body and Donna Troy from the waist down. I included Wally in the photo since she's pretty obscure but that's what I like for my collection.

A Custom A Day.... 365 days of custom figures Day 17 - Toy Biz 5 inch Captain Marvel/Photon figure by 4:F

Photon was one of my more challenging customs that I did back in the 90's. She required sculpting for her hair and a few pieces to be Frankensteined together. Her construction had limited most of her articulation. Her "cape" pieces are cut from a Water Wars Storm and glued to her arms so they no longer bend. Her head and body are from an Alpha Flight Vindicator and her boots are from Blink. her chest emblem is larger than I would like but it was challenging to paint it in her cleavage. I would love for Hasbro to do her in the Marvel Universe line.

A Custom A Day.... 365 days of custom figures Day 16 - Marvel Legends Wolverine & The X-Men Psylocke by Shinobitron

This Psylocke was an opportunity buy from eBay. Hasbro did a line of figures from the Wolverine & The X-Men cartoon in 4 inch scale but, although it was popular the show was cancelled after one season. The toy line was, as usual male figures only. Emma Frost & Storm were key players in the cartoon but, because female figures do not sell well to parents, we never saw a female in the short lived line.

This Psylocke, in Marvel Legends scale was listed on eBay with no bids when I stumbled on in via the FigureRealm. I'll assume that people passed on her since she was done in 6 inch scale leaving her without the rest of the X-Men from the cartoon to join her on the shelf. I guess. There's no other logical reason since the quality of this figure is superb.

Anyhow, I snatched her up immediately. Psylocke is my favorite X-Man and Marvel character so I welcome having her in any unique costume in any scale. I purchased this figure before I started collecting Marvel Legends and was content to have her as a one off in my collection.

She appears to use a DC Universe Classics Raven as a base figure with her hair coming from a Toy Biz 5 inch Magik figure. Her base and the psionic butterfly on her face are made from hot glue and painted pearl pink.

A Custom A Day.... 365 days of custom figures Day 15 - 80's Orange Poncho Rogue Minimate by 4:F

I am by no means a Marvel Minimates completist. I focus on unique characters, usually from the 70's through the 90's. I find Minimates to be the perfect toy. With nothing more than a different paint scheme and accessories, they can be anyone from ANY property. I have an entire custom Hanna Barbera collection of pet detective Minimates because of this. I'll introduce you to them later in the year.

I decided to make this version of Rogue because I can't figure out what the best way to execute the poncho for an action figure. Maybe a balloon? Who knows? She'll get made in the costume as a Marvel Legends custom, eventually. In the meantime here she is in Minimate form. She uses a modified cape from a Dana from the Ghostbusters 4 pack. Her hair is from an Arnold Schwarzenegger from the Expendables box set and her tunic is from a classic Mandarin. The rest is paint. I have yet to see anyone make her in this costume.

A Custom A Day.... 365 days of custom figures Day 14 - DC Direct Teen Titans Mal Duncan by 4:F

Mal Duncan uses a simple custom recipe that I found on FigureRealm.com, the sculpting is minimal so I decided to give it a shot. His sleeves, belt and collar are all made from rubber bands. He uses a DC Direct Alex Ross Black Manta figure as his base. The pants above his boots are sculpted using Apoxy Sculpt. They create the illusion well enough but I'm not 100% satisfied with the way the sculpt meets the plastic, it's not smooth enough and doesn't blend. I need more practice.

Mal was done in his first appearance costume as opposed to his more action figuresque Guardian or Herald costumes since I had the Black Manta laying around.

A Custom A Day.... 365 days of custom figures Day 13 - DC Universe Classics The New TeenTitans Trident by TitanTrap Customs

Trident is a figure that was not a priority. He only appeared in only one issue of Pérez's Titans so although I eventually wanted him, there were other characters that were a priority until I stumbled upon him on eBay.

I follow TitanTrap Customs on eBay, his work is affordable and his quality is very good. I missed out on an auction of his for Trident. He set the auction at a very reasonable Buy It Now price and someone snatched him up. In the long run it was better that I missed out because I asked him to recreate it for me and the colors on the version he made for me were more comic accurate than the version he sold on eBay. He fits in perfectly with my Titans villains.

He appears to use Blue Devil's trident as his weapon however I am unsure what the base figure or figures make him up. Top notch sculpting & paint on this one.

    A Custom A Day....

Since I began toy collecting as a hobby back in 1990 I have always had a need for custom figures. Toy companies begin action figure lines, begin to release individual characters to create teams and, more often than not leave them incomplete. Many collectors find that custom figures pollute their collection's authenticity by not being mass produced creations from the toy companies that created the preexisting toy lines. I disagree. I feel a quality custom action figure enhances a collection and help create a complete picture.

When characters are chosen for a toy line several factors come in to play. The character's current media relevance (if any), their most iconic look (they may have had multiple costumes through their sometimes vast histories) and gender. Female action figures tend to not sell to parents of the boys who are playing with them so a great many of the female characters are never rendered in plastic in the way the male characters are leaving holes in the collections.

I am a fan of the female heroes primarily so I have purchased and made quite a few "customs" throughout my years as a collector. I find it challenging (ok impossible) to get a smooth, quality finish to my sculpt work, downgrading the quality of my figure's appearance that I create so my custom work tend to be of a Frankenstein type nature where I use different parts such as a torso and arms from one figure attached to the hips and legs of another, and a different head with a full cost of paint to create my pieces. I also struggle with painting facial details on figures. The small areas, the eyes in particular give me the biggest issues. I prefer to reuse another head from a different character that will allow me to not have to paint the facial details since I am heavy handed and tend to paint in clumps rather than smooth, factory produced finishes that many of the customizers I work with can achieve.

Most of the figures that I have in my collection that have intricate sculpting and paint details have been created by other artists from around the world. The UK, The Philippines, Australia, Hong Kong, Canada and from several states throughout the US through personal communication or via eBay, which can be an outstanding resource for quality custom work. I've had the pleasure of meeting some incredibly talented artists through websites & social media. Over the past two years seeking out quality custom figures has become the main focus of my collection. Which is at over 5,000 loose pieces. As you will see over the course of this year this does not just affect super hero toy lines. I collect different toy lines spanning the 1960's through today covering cartoons, movies and television in addition to comic books. Some of the custom pieces I have had done wouldn't have been made as toys because of lack of consumer interest or based on licensing issues simply cannot be made in to toys. I haven't let that stop me from using several different toy lines to amass a complete plastic collection of all of the media I have enjoyed throughout my life.

I have decided to begin a project called A Custom A Day.... to showcase my custom pieces one a day, every day throughout 2015. If you follow me on social media or on this site you may have seen many of them before but with this project I will give a little background of each figure and its relevance to my collection. So check back daily!!!
